arrived in Canada not knowing what the future held. He was sure of one thing: he wanted to succeed. Grizzly Cat says one of the things he missed most about leaving Jamaica was the music. He began his search to find that missing link. Grizzly Cat started attending parties and community talent shows. Using his fusion of reggae and hip-hop rhymes before you know it, he was on the microphones whipping up audiences into frenzy. Grizzly Cat instinctively knew the connection between reggae and rap and used that to bring something different to the local scene, which worked. Grizzly Cat Performed with artist likes of Chuck “di living fiyah” Fendah, Capleton, Buju Banton, Shaggy, Gyptian, Sean Paul, Mr. Vegas, Tracey Moet, Merciless, Busta Rymes, The Alliance and Bounty Killa just to name a few. Grizzly Cat got a big break in 1993. He began writing and collaborating with his cousin, the now infamous, Trinity Criss, and formed the group “Shoreline Gang”. In 1994 a record label executive from Blackstone Records heard a single they had produced and invited them to New York. Canadian acts were just beginning to filter into the urban scene in NYC, beginning with Michie Mee and Maestro Fresh Wes and Snow. Shoreline packed up: moved to the big apple. It proved to be a learning experience and highly successful. The single “Body Moves” was produced by the label and the group began to tour and showcase their talent throughout the northwest USA. The record company invested heavily in a video to support the record that garnered heavy rotation on BET Grizzly recounts one of the highlights of the experience was meeting the late great Tupac Shakur. Shoreline opened for him at Freaknik in Atlanta, Georgia. “Meeting Tupac was one of the highlights of my career “says Grizzly Cat. He did not know how much it would impact him until later in his life. In late 1995 the business relationship with Blackstone Records began to unravel and Grizzly returned to Toronto, stronger and wiser. He pledged to have more control over his music and in early 1994 he relaunched his record label which he had started in Jamaica after his record deal went sour. He produced several local singles which were sold on “7” inch vinyl in Jamaica. After returning from a promotional tour, “Grizzly Cat was shot five times by an unknown assailant which was after that incident he penned his monster hit single Momma, that enjoyed heavy rotation on commercial and community radio. Momma captured a Juno nomination for best r&b single in 1999. Grizzly Cat dedicated “Momma to his mother who nursed him back to health and prayed for his speedy recovery. The experience brought music, family and my future into perspective. 2021 Grizzly Cat has found his ninth life in the music business.
